ARPA-E MAGNITO — Magnetic Acceleration Generating New Innovations and Tactical Outcomes (DE-FOA-0003590)
ARPA-E sought the discovery, synthesis, and characterization of new permanent magnet materials with a saturation magnetization or maximum energy product higher than any known material (i.e., beyond Nd2Fe14B), encouraging applicants to search both common and specialty elements — a program aimed at reducing dependence on rare earth elements in high-performance magnets. Approximately $20 million was available across the main NOFO (DE-FOA-0003590) and its SBIR/STTR companion (DE-FOA-0003591), with awards between $500,000 and $3 million; universities, companies, and national labs were eligible. Issued August 25, 2025; concept papers were due September 24, 2025 and full applications December 1, 2025. On June 19, 2026 DOE announced $72 million across the ROCKS and MAGNITO programs, including MAGNITO project selections.
