POSCO Future M Pohang Artificial Graphite Anode Plant

POSCO Future M's synthetic-route anode plant at the Blue Valley National Industrial Complex in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The first-phase 8,000 t/year line was completed in December 2021 as Korea's first domestic artificial graphite anode production, and POSCO's March 2026 releases state the company currently operates the Pohang plant at that same 8,000 t/year capacity. Feedstock is coal-based and petroleum-based coke derived from coal tar generated in POSCO's steelmaking process (needle coke in the 2023 release), which the plant graphitizes into artificial graphite anode material. A second phase of 10,000 t/year, announced in February 2023 for completion in the second half of 2024 and taking combined capacity to 18,000 t/year, is recorded as a target-ramp capacity only: the March 2026 releases still cite 8,000 t/year, so the expansion is not evidenced as reached. Provenance notes: the February 2023 release was published under the company's then-name POSCO Chemical and describes the same December 2021 Pohang plant that the March 2026 releases attribute to POSCO Future M, so the 18,000 t/year figure is carried at reported confidence; the December 2021 completion is stated only to the month, and the commissioned event uses the first of that month. Modeling note: the graphitization line's coke feed is recorded as graphitizable-carbon-precursor and the artificial graphite anode product as synthetic-anode-material.

Operating

Synthetic-route production of artificial graphite anode material: coal-based and petroleum-based coke (needle coke) derived from coal tar generated in POSCO's steelmaking process is graphitized into battery anode material. Phase 1 was completed in December 2021 at the Pohang Blue Valley National Industrial Complex; the sources state the month but not the day of completion, and the commissioned event uses the first of that month.
