NOVONIX Riverside Synthetic Graphite Facility
NOVONIX's synthetic graphite plant on Riverside Drive in Chattanooga, Tennessee, built around the company's proprietary continuous graphitization furnace technology. DOE finalized a US$100 million Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grant for Riverside on 31 October 2023 (resized down from the US$150 million selection announced in October 2022 and reallocated to Riverside), against a stated target of up to 20,000 tpa. In April 2026 the U.S. Government certified the Riverside project in connection with US$103 million of Section 48C Advanced Energy Project tax credits, payable when NOVONIX places its first 11,000 tpa of production in service before 7 April 2028. The plant delivered its first mass-production, commercial-grade synthetic graphite sample for industrial applications on 29 September 2025; NOVONIX states mass production begins in 2026 for lead customer Panasonic, so the graphitization line is recorded as commissioned rather than operating. Riverside's finishing step is recorded as a separate line because the sources distinguish industrial-grade product already made from battery-grade anode material still in qualification; the site vocabulary carries a single synthetic-anode-material token for both grades.

Continuous graphitization
Commissioned
NOVONIX proprietary continuous graphitization furnace technology converting a graphitizable carbon precursor into synthetic graphite; first mass-production, commercial-grade industrial sample delivered September 2025, with mass production stated to begin in 2026
Material flow
Graphitizable carbon precursor → Synthetic anode material
Capacity
20,000 t/year · Product mass · Target · as of Oct 31, 2023
Qualification
Anode material finishing and qualification
Announced
Finishing and product qualification of graphitized synthetic graphite into anode material; the sources distinguish industrial-grade product (qualified first, faster path to market) from battery-grade anode material for lead customer Panasonic, which remained in qualification as of September 2025. The site material vocabulary carries a single synthetic-anode-material token for both grades, so the input and output claims below name the same material and differ by grade
